According to a recent Turkish article, the financial crisis seems to have also hit the Ecumenical Patriarchate in Istanbul. The newspaper reports that the Patriarchate is in extremely bad economic conditions, as the employees that work on its premises are experiencing serious financial problems.
The article in the Turkish newspaper titled, “The Crisis Hit the Employees of the Patriarchate,” explains that during the last two years more than 1oo people working in the Patriarchate of Istanbul didn’t receive their entire salary, only a part of the original sum. Employees report that they are in a very difficult situation, as they receive an entire salary only every 4-5 months and are forced to take loans to overcome shortages and pay their monthly expenses.
The worst part is that no one informs them or explains to them when they will be paid properly, or when the situation will get back to normal.
Last October, Patriarchate employees reported that their wages had not been paid since June, while Athens reassured them that the money had already been sent to the administration of Fanari. At that time, it was not specified whether the Greek government was to blame for the delay in payments or the economic committee of the Ecumenical Patriarchate. The employees are demanding that they get their salaries, as it is their legal right.
